Why VPN Won't Connect

The app is installed, you're signed in, but the connect button just spins and nothing happens? Let's go through it in order — from the most common, quick fixes to the ones that need a message to support.

1. Check your subscription

The most common cause is an expired subscription or a free trial that ran out. The app and the "Subscription" section of the dashboard show the status clearly: if the subscription is inactive, you'll see it before you even try to connect, not just a stuck "Connecting" screen. You can renew or pick a plan in the dashboard in a couple of minutes.

2. Give the tunnel time after a network switch

If you just switched between Wi-Fi and mobile data (say, you left home or walked into a building), the tunnel needs a bit of time to re-establish the connection with the new network address — usually 20–45 seconds. That's not a failure, it's a normal part of how the protocol works: the app rebuilds the connection automatically, no need to turn the VPN off and on manually.

3. Try a different server

If one specific server won't connect but everything else is fine, just pick a different country or node from the server list in the app. Load and technical condition vary between servers, and switching is the fastest way to check whether it's a local issue or something broader.

4. Check whether the internet works at all

Turn off the VPN tunnel and open any site directly. If regular internet doesn't work either, the problem isn't the VPN — it's the device's network connection itself (Wi-Fi, mobile data, airplane mode). If regular internet works fine but no HamikVPN server connects, it's worth checking with support — there may be a temporary issue on our side.

5. Restart the app

Sometimes a simple restart helps: close the app completely (not just minimize it) and open it again. If this isn't your first attempt in a row, also check the battery settings covered in the article on Android installation and setup — aggressive battery optimization can stop the app's background processes before it even tries to connect.

If nothing helped

A detailed breakdown of specific errors — the "couldn't connect over any protocol" message, MTU and DNS settings — is collected on a separate page: VPN not connecting: causes and fixes.

Message support with the step where the connection gets stuck and which server you tried — @HamikVPNSupportBot on Telegram. That gets resolved faster than a general "it doesn't work" report.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the app keep trying to reconnect after a network switch?
The tunnel usually re-establishes itself automatically within 20–45 seconds after switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data — there's no need to reconnect manually, just wait it out.
How do I know if it's a subscription problem and not a connection problem?
The app shows your subscription status and remaining time on the home screen and in the "Subscription" section of the dashboard. If your subscription has expired, the app tells you explicitly when you try to connect — it doesn't just hang on "Connecting".
Does switching servers in the app help if one server won't connect?
Yes, that's the first thing worth trying — pick a different country or server from the list. If the issue was specific to that one node, another server will connect normally.
What if no server connects at all?
Check that the internet works without VPN (open any site with the tunnel off). If regular internet works but no HamikVPN server connects, contact support on Telegram — it may be a temporary issue on our end.
