VPN for Android: install, setup, common issues
Installing the HamikVPN app on Android takes a couple of minutes, but a couple of steps in the process can look unfamiliar if this is the first time you're installing an app outside of Google Play. Here's the full walkthrough plus the three most common reasons something might go wrong.
Installation, step by step
The HamikVPN app is distributed as an .apk file directly from the official app page, not through Google Play — so the first install requires a couple of extra confirmations you wouldn't see when installing from an app store.
- Download the .apk — the file lands in your "Downloads" folder.
- Open the downloaded file. Android will ask for the "Install unknown apps" permission for the browser or file manager you're using to open the file — this permission belongs to that specific source app, not to HamikVPN itself.
- Confirm the install — from here it's just the regular Android install screen.
- Sign in with the same email and password as your dashboard on the website — your device and subscription connect automatically, no need to create a key manually.
"Play Protect blocked the install" or a similar warning
Google Play Protect warns by default about any .apk installed outside of Google Play, regardless of what the app actually is — that's how the mechanism works for all third-party .apk files, not a personal check specifically on HamikVPN. Developers who don't publish on Google Play (including many open-source VPN clients) get the same warning. Make sure you downloaded the file from hamik.site, and you can continue the install via "Install anyway" / "More details" → "Install anyway" (the exact wording varies by Android version).
The app disconnects on its own in the background
The most common cause is aggressive battery optimization at the device manufacturer level, not an issue with the VPN tunnel itself. Since Android 12, battery settings have three modes per app: "Unrestricted," "Optimized," "Restricted" — many apps default to "Optimized," and the system can kill their background processes during idle mode (Doze). For a VPN app this looks like a random connection drop after a few minutes with the screen off.
On top of stock Android, some manufacturers layer their own battery management on top, with dedicated settings screens: autostart on Xiaomi (MIUI/HyperOS), "sleeping apps" on Samsung (One UI), protected apps on Huawei (EMUI), "background and autostart" on Oppo/Realme (ColorOS). These need to be configured separately from the system battery setting, and after major system updates these settings sometimes get reset.
- Open Settings → Apps → HamikVPN → Battery and choose "Unrestricted."
- If your manufacturer has a separate autostart/protected apps screen — enable HamikVPN there too.
- After a major Android update or manufacturer firmware update — re-check these settings.
Can't sign into the app
If your email and password are correct but sign-in still fails — check whether the account is blocked (there's an explicit notification for that) and whether you've hit the login attempt limit for a short time period (brute-force protection, clears after a few minutes). If you signed up via Telegram rather than email, use the "Sign in with Telegram" button instead of the email/password form.
